Air Quality
Air
If we wish to live, there are four fundamental, non-negotiable needs of the human body: Air, water, sleep, and food. Air is the most critical. We are constantly exposed to microparticles in the air. A quality air filtration system can help remove these particles. High-end units can even remove volatile gases. The greatest impact we can make on air quality is to install a filtration unit in our bedrooms. Several examples of air filtration units that I use can be found on the Amazon affiliate page, and there are many others.
An added benefit is the white noise these units create, which can mask outside sounds and improve sleep. Make sure the unit has a night mode without lights to keep your room dark. After a few months, you will understand the importance of changing the filter on a unit. I am always amazed by how much dust the filter has removed from the air.
HEPA vs. MERV: In the air filter community, HEPA and MERV are two ways to describe filtering ability. HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters are designed to remove as many particles as possible with each pass. While some units remove over 99% of particles, this measurement is useless if the unit cannot circulate enough air to clear the room. Often, a much larger unit is required to achieve the clean air delivery rate (CADR). CADR is the more important number. Look for a unit with the highest possible CADR in your price range. There are too many choices on the market, and price does not always equal performance. Check reviews and do some research. I use BreathSmart units from Alen Air.
A MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating is another way to measure a filter’s ability to remove particles. A MERV rating of 11 strikes a good balance between airflow and efficiency. Clean Air Kits sells super quiet, high-efficiency kits that provide great value and may be more effective than commercial units. If you don’t mind assembling them, these units are worth considering.
Regardless of which route you choose, please select an air purifier for your bedroom and other areas of your home. It’s much healthier to have these units filter the air than to rely on our lungs.
